THE FOOL
My buddy Willie last week accused me of purposely attempting to string along these blogs to create heightened awareness for my new CD Flyin Blind, so that I could drive the price up…..thanks Willie……I love to live in that fantasy, I feel like The Rolling Stones….pre announcing my new multi-million dollar tour…..minus a few million dollars.
This week’s blog is about the song The Fool. I wrote this song because I had two tarot card readings in a relatively short period of time and I drew The Fool both times. It spoke to me enough where I thought what an interesting character…..he needs a song to accompany him….so I wrote this song.
The Fool is the spirit in search of experience. He represents the mystical cleverness bereft of reason within us, the childlike ability to tune into the inner workings of the world. The sun shining behind him represents the divine nature of the Fool’s wisdom and exuberance, holy madness or ‘crazy wisdom’. On his back are all the possessions he might need. In his hand there is a flower, showing his appreciation of beauty. He is frequently accompanied by a dog, sometimes seen as his animal desires, sometimes as the call of the “real world”, nipping at his heels and distracting him. He is seemingly unconcerned that he is standing on a precipice, apparently about to step off. The number 0 is a perfect significator for the Fool, as it can become anything when he reaches his destination as in the sense of ‘joker’s wild’.
I can relate to this character and once I found out what he stood for, I knew why I drew the card. There is a big part of me that is that character. What I find really interesting though is that the fool is an illusion because one of his many traits is he always finds his way…..even when people around him are not so sure……I’ve been there.
I love this song also because of my life-long love for the fiddle and I was able to record an awesome fiddler, thank you Jeff Duncan, who would give the fool the wind under his feet for the journey of this song. It is one of my favorites and I must admit that I also really relate to the line…..crazy wise old man……I know that guy to.
Next week……the song the CD was named after Flyin Blind.
The Fool
When there’s no number, by our name, where do we go,
I wonder what the fool thinks about,
Ragged clothes, stocking hats, with his clothes tied on his back,
The fool, travels not, where he knows,
He’s magically clever without any reason, a spirit in search of himself,
I wonder what the fool thinks about,
With a flower in his pack, he appreciates the beautiful things,
The fool, travels not, where he knows,
With a dog by his side, he wanders through his life,
Not a slave to others thoughts,
He’s a master of men, has a way with the zen,
He’s a crazy wise old man,
Carries all he needs with him each day, nothing more and nothing less,
I wonder what the fool thinks about,
Blind faith, is the fool’s, the fool’s only guide,
The fool, travels not, where he knows.
With a dog by his side, he wanders through his life,
Not a slave to others thoughts,
He’s a master of men, has a way with the zen,
He’s a crazy wise old man,
He’s a crazy wise old man,
He’s a crazy wise old man,
He’s a master of men, has a way with the zen,
He’s a crazy wise old man
