BE MY ROCK

It is always a challenge to pick the order of the songs on any CD. It is truly an art and it also an art to determine how much time should be between each song. Unfortunately, the days of albums and CD sales have been replaced with single song purchases. When I was younger, we looked forward to an album being released so we could see what the album cover was going to look like and we listened to the whole album to get the feel.

Well, there are certain things that I will always do whether they are seen or recognized…..the first is I still find it important to lay the songs of CD out in the order in which I want to tell the story. To me a CD (or album) is a book of sorts with individual stories that tell the big story of the book. Well my book (or CD) this go round is called Flyin Blind. I have written to why I chose that….today the first song on the CD ….Be My Rock (lyrics below).

This song was written with my daughter in mind that I wanted to have her sing a song on this CD. We had experimented with a Grace Potter song and she knocked it out of the park…..so this was the follow up. This song is about love, support and nurturing to me. With a nice play on words…..I’ll be your rock…you be my roll. We can stand on each other’s shoulders and we can lean on each other when we need to…..and most of all……we will be each other’s support when we need it.

The other part of this song revolves around…… Times are a Changin’……thank you Bob Dylan….and they are changing and we need support and love as our lives change.

The icing on the cake was again, I had no idea how good Kelsey was going to be…..and she was amazing!!! Everybody on the project knew this was going to be our first song because it sets the tone for the healing of this CD……and it was so nice and fresh to hear a young, soulful voice putting love and support in the world…..it was awesome.

The surprise for her was that I recorded my voice at the end of the CD saying …”I love you bear” (that is her nickname). It put a bow on a perfect experience and a perfect song……thanks bear and thanks to all involved in capturing a true moment of healing and fatherhood……this is why I do this.
